YMT Open Weekend for York Residents

York residents can visit York Castle Museum, York Art Gallery and the Yorkshire Museum for FREE on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 June 2017. To claim free entry on either of these dates, please bring a valid YorkCard or Council Tax Bill as proof of residency. Under 17’s always go free at all of our sites.

York Castle Museum
Open daily 9.30am – 5pm
Wander through Victorian streets, experience life in a WW1 trench and venture into the prison cells that once held the notorious highwayman Dick Turpin. Discover 400 years of Fashion, Food and Life in Shaping the Body and delve into the delicious history of York’s most iconic chocolates and sweets at our brand new experience: Chocolate – York’s Sweet Past.

York Art Gallery
Open daily 10am – 5pm
Voted ‘Visitor Attraction of the Year’ at the Visit York Awards, winner of the Family Friendly Museum in the Kids in Museums awards and shortlisted for the Art Fund Museum of the Year 2016, York Art Gallery is home to CoCA (the Centre of Ceramic Art) and the first major exhibition of York born artist Albert Moore. It features more than 20 paintings from one of the leading artists of the Aesthetic movement in the late nineteenth century.

Yorkshire Museum
Open daily 10am – 5pm
Journey through thousands of years of York’s history, walk on a genuine Roman mosaic floor, marvel at priceless Viking and Medieval treasures, and the monsters of the deep that swam when Yorkshire was beneath the sea. Now you can see some of the most significant Viking treasure hoards ever discovered in Britain in Viking: Rediscover the Legend, a major new partnership exhibition with the British Museum.

Museum Monkeys Drop-In Sessions

Discover what we have to offer for under 5s in our drop in Museum Monkeys sessions at York Castle Museum with trench building, play with the soldiers in the sand and hang the rats on the line based on our exhibition 1914: When the World Changed Forever.

Drop in at any time from 11am – 1pm and 2pm – 4pm on 24 or 25 June 2017.

Free with admission, no need to book.

York residents can visit for FREE on these dates as part of our York Residents Open Weekend.

Guide's Gallery Talk

Venue: York Castle Museum

Join one of our costumed guides on our famous Victorian street Kirkgate every day at 11.45am and 3.00pm for a free 15 minute informal talk.

Each talk is different but will provide an introduction to Kirkgate, the history of York Castle Museum, and the objects on display, as well as the people who lived and worked in York during the Victorian period of 1870-1901.

Please note that talks are subject to the availability of our guides.

York Museum Garden Tours

Date: Sunday 25 June 2017, 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Venue: York Museum Gardens

Meet inside the Museum Street gates and gain an insight into one of the most popular gardens in York. The gardens contain a wealth of plant life, botanical specimens and wildlife, as well as the spectacular ruins of St Mary’s Abbey and the Roman Multangular Tower. Our knowledgeable guides will show you the highlights of this truly unique garden.

Tours start at 1pm every Sunday and last approximately one hour.
