Meet the People – Fri 2 Jun 2017

Come and meet costumed characters from York’s sweet past on Kirkgate, our recreated Victorian street. Look out for Sir Joseph Terry, Joseph Rowntree and Mary Ann Craven who will tell you about their world famous chocolates and sweets.

Unfortunately this event has been cancelled. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Potential objects of treasure, as defined by the Treasure Act 1996, must be reported to the coroner within 14 days of discovery. Our Finds Liaison Officer based at the Yorkshire Museum can advise and facilitate the reporting of treasure.

Bring your finds and meet our PAS Officer today between 10am and 1pm (no need to book).

A Box of Hope – Fri 2 Jun 2017

Learn how the City of York sent a chocolately gift to soldiers at the front during the First World War. Inspired by these tins, you’ll have the chance to make your own version with a sweet treat inside.

Traditional Viking Stones – Fri 2 Jun 2017

Vikings recorded their stories by painting pictures on stones. Design and paint your own stone to take away of Viking Battles, Gods and Monsters.

Roman Ghost Cellar Tour at Treasurer’s House – Fri 2 Jun 2017

As part of the Eboracum Roman Festival, enjoy daily Roman Ghost Cellar Tours at Treasurer’s House in York. Tours take place 1-4 June each day at 11.30am, 12.30pm, 1pm, 2.30pm and 3.30pm lasting approx. 30 minutes.

Adults £4.00, children (5+) £3.50. Pre-booking advised due to limited capacity – please call the venue directly on 01904 624247.

Guide’s Gallery Talk – Fri 2 Jun 2017

Join one of our costumed guides on our famous Victorian street Kirkgate every day at 11.45am and 3.00pm for a free 15 minute informal talk.

Each talk is different but will provide an introduction to Kirkgate, the history of York Castle Museum, and the objects on display, as well as the people who lived and worked in York during the Victorian period of 1870-1901.

Please note that talks are subject to the availability of our guides.

The Discovery of the Chester Amphitheatre & the Search for York’s Lost Amphitheatre – Fri 2 Jun 2017

Join Stewart Ainsworth of Channel 4’s Time Team to hear how the Roman amphitheatre in Chester was rediscovered, followed by archaeologist Tim Sutherland demonstrating how it could be possible to make a similar discovery in York.
