Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Statement of Intent
Introduction
York Museums Trust (YMT) believes passionately that our collections and venues should benefit the whole of society. As a public body we have a duty to make society equitable by tackling discrimination and providing equality of opportunity for all as defined by the Equality Act 2010. This statement aligns with our Vision, Mission and Values
EDI Statement of Intent
We are dedicated to providing an inclusive, equitable, accessible and welcoming environment which supports a diverse and culturally rich community. We believe that no one should receive less favourable treatment while working within us, volunteering with us, acting as a trustee or visiting us on the grounds of a protected characteristic or socio economic status. We will not tolerate any forms of intimidation, bullying or harassment and have robust policies to deal with this. YMT is committed to providing equity of opportunity by aiming to ensure that its practices and procedures follow legal requirements and good practice.
Under the Equality Act 2010, certain characteristics are specifically protected and are therefore referred to as ‘Protected Characteristics’. Although not part of the Act, we also recognise that a person’s Socio-economic Status can be a source of discrimination and we include this in our policy. We acknowledge that individuals who belong to more than one protected group can be disproportionately affected by discrimination. This is known as intersectionality or multiple discrimination.
York is a Human Rights City, and we work closely with York Human Rights City Network to ensure we promote Human Rights and speak out against discrimination.
Our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Action Group lives our values and underpins our commitment to promote diversity and human rights, and to meet the needs and surpass the expectations of all our visitors.
This statement applies to all our staff, Trustees, volunteers, contractors and community partners. Everyone working for and with us has a personal and professional responsibility for implementing and promoting the principles of the Statement in our day-to-day work and will be held accountable for this through our Dignity at Work policy and Behaviours.
