Insect Festival 2017

Insect Festival 2017 is a celebration for anyone with a fascination for insects – from exhibitors and traders to wildlife groups and the general public. The event will take place on Sunday 2 July in the York Museum Gardens, with exhibits and a range of other stands and activities being held in the beautiful 14th century Hospitium and surrounding grounds.

Adults £1, free for under 16s.

The York Museum Gardens are free.

Venue: York Castle Museum

Join one of our costumed guides on our famous Victorian street Kirkgate every day at 11.45am and 3.00pm for a free 15 minute informal talk.

Each talk is different but will provide an introduction to Kirkgate, the history of York Castle Museum, and the objects on display, as well as the people who lived and worked in York during the Victorian period of 1870-1901.

Please note that talks are subject to the availability of our guides.

York Museum Garden Tours

Venue: York Museum Gardens

Meet inside the Museum Street gates and gain an insight into one of the most popular gardens in York. The gardens contain a wealth of plant life, botanical specimens and wildlife, as well as the spectacular ruins of St Mary’s Abbey and the Roman Multangular Tower. Our knowledgeable guides will show you the highlights of this truly unique garden.

Tours start at 1pm every Sunday and last approximately one hour.

Get the most out of your camera with professional photographer John Illingworth. Spend time on gallery before a unique opportunity to privately view and photograph authentic Viking artefacts that are currently not on display. Numbers are strictly limited to allow plenty of time with the tutor and exclusive access to the artefacts. You will need to bring your own camera and a tripod.

Relaxed Opening

Our Relaxed Openings are designed for visitors who would prefer a quieter visit to the art gallery.

The gallery provides a tranquil, spacious environment for visitors to explore without the need to worry about extreme light and sound levels, confined spaces, or large crowds. Our building is fully accessible (including the cafe, shops, toilets and outside space), and our Welcome Team have received training in assiting visitors with additional needs.

There are plenty of areas where you can sit down and relax, and a designated quiet space should you need it. Our Welcome Team will be happy to help with any queries you may have.

The event is free for visitors with autism, dementia, visual impairments or similar issues. Carers and children under 16 will also be admitted for free. Accompanying members of a group will be admitted for £4, and standard admission is £7.50. There is no need to book ahead.

Please note that due to some high humidity levels, we have had to temporarily install some dehumidifiers in the galleries. This is to protect the artworks. Unfortunately until the humidity levels have been brought under control, there machines will be operating and there is an associated noise with their operation.
