The Viking Great Army and its Legacy – Thu 6 Jul 2017

The Viking Great Army and its Legacy

Date: Thursday 6 July 2017, 6:30 pm - 8:15 pm
Venue: Yorkshire Museum

A lecture by Prof. Julian Richards (Professor of Archaeology, University of York).

From 865-875 AD a Viking Great Army travelled rapidly across England, creating fear amongst the divided Anglo-Saxon kingdoms. During this period its objectives changed from raiding and the seizure of portable wealth (silver and slaves) to political conquest and the seizure of land and permanent settlement.

This talk with present the latest archaeological discoveries – ranging from huge camps of thousands of warriors, to smaller raiding parties attacking Northumbrian farms – to illustrate this turbulent and transformative decade of English history.
