Come and meet costumed characters from York’s sweet past on Kirkgate, our recreated Victorian street. Look out for Sir Joseph Terry, Joseph Rowntree and Mary Ann Craven and hear about their world famous chocolates and sweets.

Take part in a series of practical art workshops led by local professional artists. Stretch your imagination and explore new materials. Whether art is just a hobby or something you are studying (or planning to study) at GCSE or A level, Teenage Art School will help you develop your skills

Workshops take place Thursday 27 to Sunday 30 July, 10:30 – 3:30 each day and are suitable for anyone aged 14 to 18.

Rowntree’s Theatrical Performances

As part of our new chocolate experience, Chocolate: York’s Sweet Past, York Castle Museum and the Rowntree Society have been looking at the history of the Rowntree family. Lawrence, the grandson of Joseph Rowntree, died in the Battle of Passchendaele which started 100 years ago on July 31 1917.

To commemorate the anniversary of the battle actors Rebecca Beattie or Charlotte Wood will provide performances of the life of Lawrence Rowntree using extracts from his journal.

Performances will take place in 1914: When the World Changed Forever exhibition at York Castle Museum daily from 27 July to 2 August at the following times: 11.00am, 12.00pm, 1.30pm, 2.30pm and 3.30pm.

Viking Saga Books – Sat 29 Jul 2017

Viking Saga Books

Viking stories were passed down through generations and were remembered and retold for hundreds of years. Make your own saga book with a twist! The direction your story takes depends upon the roll of a dice, then add your own pictures to make it really special.

Sessions take place 11am – 1pm and 2pm – 4pm.

Guide's Gallery Talk

Join one of our costumed guides on our famous Victorian street Kirkgate every day at 11.45am and 3.00pm for a free 15 minute informal talk.

Each talk is different but will provide an introduction to Kirkgate, the history of York Castle Museum, and the objects on display, as well as the people who lived and worked in York during the Victorian period of 1870-1901.

Please note that talks are subject to the availability of our guides.
