BBC History Magazine’s History Weekend 2018 – Fri 19 Oct 2018

From 19–21 October, BBC History Magazine’s History Weekend will be returning for its fourth year to the historic city of York.

The ancient city is steeped in history and we’re delighted to be hosting the festival in two fantastic venues: Yorkshire Museum, one of the first purpose-built museums in England, and King’s Manor, a stunning collection of Grade I listed buildings.

Featuring 29 diverse and engaging talks, interactive Q&As and book signings from some of the world’s leading historians and authors – including Ian Kershaw, Alison Weir, Andrew Roberts, Tracy Borman and Michael Wood – it’s a weekend not to be missed…

Fantasy Creature Illustration Workshop – Sat 20 Oct 2018

The BFG in Pictures. Opens 12 October.

From playful pets to hideous monsters, learn how to draw fantasy creatures at this exciting workshop.

The workshop is suitable for families and childreand is included with your gallery admission.

York Observatory Open Day – Sat 20 Oct 2018

Venue: York Museum Gardens

Built in 1832 and 1833 and restored in 1981, York Observatory (which is nestled in York Museum Gardens) is the oldest working observatory in Yorkshire.

It houses a 4inch refractor telescope made by Thomas Cooke in 1850.

Opening hours are subject to the availability of volunteers, so please contact us ahead of your visit.

Our open days are free and there’s no need to book.

Automaton Clock: Talk and Demonstration – Sat 20 Oct 2018

Join us for this talk on the Automaton Clock, an extravagant clock featuring moving figures and sound.

In this talk, we’ll discuss this fascinating clock and what we know about its history. Afterwards, we’ll activate the clock so you can see its many decorations brought to life.

The talk starts at 2pm, will last between 5-10 minutes and is included with your gallery admission. For our admission prices, please see our visitor information page.
