Open throughout Season of Drawing for self-led activity

Our drawing studio at York Art Gallery is a welcoming space for people to create, learn, and share their artwork. It is a space for people of all ages and skill levels to be inspired by our Season of Drawing exhibitions and have a go at drawing! You can try sketching your surroundings, drawing from reference photos or still-life objects, or experimenting with different mediums such as pencils, markers, or paints.

You can expect a range of drawing materials, equipment and prompts to help boost your creativity. Twice a month we will be joined by experienced drawing artists who will offer guidance, support and super fun ways to get involved. For more info on these activities look at the YAG events page.

Event description:  

Join us for a family friendly spooky storytelling in our spooky cells  

Gather round as local storyteller tells tales of ghosts and ghouls, all in the Castle Museum Cells. Learn about the history of the cell and the people who were once held there, while also getting into the spooky spirit of the holiday. Don’t miss out on this one-of-a-kind experience that’s sure to be a hit with both kids and adults alike!

Story Craft Theatre will be going on a Wicked Wednesday adventure, and you are all invited!  

With the power of imagination, you might find yourselves swinging through a magical garden, jumping over mesmerising mountains or even swimming in a great ocean. All from the comfort of York Art Gallery.  

The sessions will include games, singing and an interactive story.  

Children must be always accompanied by an adult. Due to space restrictions, a max of 1 adult per booking.

Story Craft Theatre is a children’s theatre company created by Cassie Vallance and Janet-Emily Bruce. After setting up in 2018 they have hosted birthday parties, events and classes throughout the UK. Partnerships have included Castle Howard, National Trust, Rural Arts, Rowntree Park, Theatre 41 and York Theatre Royal.

For those thrill-seeking adults, enter York Castle Museum’s prison if you dare, for an afterhours spooktacular tour on All Hallows Eve. Visitors can step back in time with the York Castle Prison Gaoler after the lights go out for a Haunted Halloween Tour. The Gaoler will tell the story of the dark side of the prison’s history along with tales of the paranormal experienced by staff in recent years. Pre-booking essential.
