Don’t miss this ever popular and award-winning experience celebrating the true magic of Christmas past…

Take a stroll over the cobbles of York Castle Museum’s twinkling Victorian street, Kirkgate, and experience the true magic and traditions of days gone by.

Journey back in time to discover how Christmas was celebrated over 150 years ago on Kirkgate; the ideal backdrop for a month of Christmas festivities, music and cheer.

  • Walk under the beautiful garlands
  • Enjoy the intimate glow of our decorated Christmas trees
  • Listen to carols
  • Meet our Victorian residents
  • Discover original Victorian Christmas gifts displayed in the shop windows
  • See the Period Rooms decorated in traditional festive style
  • Follow the tempting aromas to our working studio kitchen, where you will learn about traditional Victorian gingerbread recipes and perhaps even have a try!

We’ll also have a Christmas trail for you to enjoy. Please note: this isn’t available on the dates when Father Christmas is visiting the Museum (see Meet Father Christmas).

Admission

The prices for A Victorian Christmas are:

  • Adults: £11 (with a 10% Gift Aid Donation) / £10 (without a 10% Gift Aid Donation)
  • Child under £16: Free
  • Adult with a YMT Card: Free
  • Access Day Ticket: £5.50
  • York resident: £8
  • Registered carer accompanying a disabled visitor: Free (please note that evidence may be required)

A Father Christmas Experience

Meet Father Christmas and Discover the Magic of Christmas Past

Take part in our special Christmas trail, join in with festive activities, including gingerbread making demonstrations and craft activities, which lead to an unforgettable visit to Father Christmas.

Join us in our Elf School where Father Christmas will be waiting with a traditional gift and some Christmas sparkle.

This fun festive event will take place 10am-4pm.

Visits to Father Christmas

Due to popular demand all visits to Father Christmas will be in groups of 3 – 4 families.

Father Christmas will be taking well-earned breaks throughout the day, at the following times:

  • 11.30am – 12 noon
  • 1.30pm – 2pm
  • 3.30pm – 4pm

Admission

  • Adults: £13 (with a 10% Gift Aid Donation) / £11.82 (without donation)
  • Access Day Ticket: £7.50
  • YMT Card Holder £3
  • Child under £16: £7
  • Registered Carer Accompanying a Disabled Visitor: Free (please note that evidence may be required)

Cancelled: York Observatory Open Day

Venue: York Museum Gardens

Built in 1832 and 1833 and restored in 1981, York Observatory (which is nestled in York Museum Gardens) is the oldest working observatory in Yorkshire.

It houses a 4inch refractor telescope made by Thomas Cooke in 1850.

Opening hours are subject to the availability of volunteers, so please contact us ahead of your visit.

Our open days are free and there’s no need to book.

Join us for this talk on the Automaton Clock, an extravagant clock featuring moving figures and sound.

In this talk, we’ll discuss this fascinating clock and what we know about its history. Afterwards, we’ll activate the clock so you can see its many decorations brought to life.

Come along for a lively discussion about Bookworm: A Memoir of Childhood Reading by Lucy Mangan, regardless of whether you liked or even finished the book!
