Join us n this lunch talk with the Year of the Fly organisation to fully educate the importance of all flies, their role in nature and in the human society.  

“Year of the Fly” is also an opportunity for fly specialists to showcase their research work and new discoveries in the field and make these more widely known.

Curator’s Choice- St Luke Drawing the Virgin and Child – Wed 16 Oct 2019

Venue: York Art Gallery

Dr Beatrice Bertram will deliver a talk on the Dieric Bouts-workshop painting St Luke Drawing the Virgin and Child (late 15th century), on loan from the Bowes Museum. This major work was the inspiration behind the exhibition Making a Masterpiece: Bouts and Beyond, which explores how artists have created images from the northern Renaissance to the present day, and how they project conceptions of their practices back out to the world.

The Sculpture of Michael Lyons: A Painter’s View – Fri 18 Oct 2019

Date: Friday 18 October 2019, 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Venue: York Art Gallery

David Sweet was a friend and colleague of Michael Lyons’ for many years, visiting his studio and exhibitions many times over that period. He also has written extensively on the work for journal articles, catalogues and reviews. The talk will trace Lyons’ sculptural journey, exploring the major issues in his work and its relationship with the wider cultural context of late 20th Century British art.

The talk will highlight the value of Michael’s artistic achievement and the importance of his contribution to the practice of sculpture, a pursuit to which he devoted his life.

York Museum Garden Tours – Sun 20 Oct 2019

Venue: York Museum Gardens

Meet inside the Museum Street gates and gain an insight into one of the most popular gardens in York. The gardens contain a wealth of plant life, botanical specimens and wildlife, as well as the spectacular ruins of St Mary’s Abbey and the Roman Multangular Tower. Our knowledgeable guides will show you the highlights of this truly unique garden.

Tours start at 1pm every Sunday and last approximately one hour.

Free, no need to book.

OCTOBER HALF TERM: PHOTO FABULOUS – Sat 26 Oct 2019

Dates: Saturday 26 October 2019–Sunday 3 November 2019, All Day
Venue: Yorkshire Museum

Some of the earliest photographs of York date back to 1844. To accompany a new exhibition in York Museum Gardens join us this half term at the Yorkshire Museum for self-led activities. 

Recreate some of the first portraits taken in York as you dress up and become one of the leading Victorian visionaries who attended the 1844 meeting of the British Science Association.
