York Museum Garden Tours – Sun 6 Oct 2019

Venue: York Museum Gardens

Meet inside the Museum Street gates and gain an insight into one of the most popular gardens in York. The gardens contain a wealth of plant life, botanical specimens and wildlife, as well as the spectacular ruins of St Mary’s Abbey and the Roman Multangular Tower. Our knowledgeable guides will show you the highlights of this truly unique garden.

Tours start at 1pm every Sunday and last approximately one hour.

Free, no need to book.

Art for Wellbeing (16+ only) – Sun 6 Oct 2019

Date: Sunday 6 October 2019, 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm
Venue: York Art Gallery

Informal practical sessions for adults (16+ only), just drop-in and release your creative energy, in the company of others and with gentle guidance on hand. This is an inclusive session, suitable for all abilities.

Art for Wellbeing is held monthly throughout the year except in August.

Museum Monkey: Victorian & Edwardian Entertainment – Thu 10 Oct 2019

Victorian & Edwardian Entertainment

We invite early year explorers to the York Castle Museum to play with the Punch and Judy set and make a cardboard model of an Edwardian beach hut.

Activities for children aged two to five years old which include songs, stories, games and craft activities. Sessions are based on familiar preschool play areas, which are enhanced to help children learn about the museum’ collections and exhibitions through play. Sessions are a mixture of free flow and adult led activities which all relate to the Early Years curriculum.

Sessions are now FREE! Museum admission applies for adults. (Free admission for under 5’s) Booking Essential

museum baby: Egyptian – Fri 11 Oct 2019

We invite babies (under two years old) to the Yorkshire Museum to wrap the mummy, build a pyramid and listen to the story of Egyptians.

Special baby sessions linked to exhibitions, including songs and sensory activities for babies and their carers. Sessions are a mixture of free flow and adult led activities which all relate to the early years Curriculum. A perfect introduction to museums!

Artist Workshop – Christopher Cook – Sat 12 Oct 2019

Date: Saturday 12 October 2019, 10:30 am - 4:00 pm
Venue: York Art Gallery

This experimental workshop with artist Christopher Cook will introduce collage techniques developed by the Surrealist movement that also influence his work in the current exhibition, Making a Masterpiece: Bouts and Beyond.

Whilst the advent of software such as Photoshop has
largely overtaken such physical strategies, his workshop will  emphasise its relevance, especially to interactive group activities, as a means to unlock the imagination and open up new narratives.

Please note that the event is 10.30 am – 12.30 pm and 2 pm – 4 pm.

Christopher Cook : An Artists talk – Sat 12 Oct 2019

Christopher Cook is an artist and writer based in Devon. He has been commissioned to produce new work in response to the still-life paintings in York Art Gallery’s collection, which are featured in the exhibition Making a Masterpiece: Bouts and Beyond. Join him on Gallery alongside his work as he discusses his working practise, methods and inspiration.

The 180th anniversary of Queen Victoria proposing marriage to Albert Celebrations – Tue 15 Oct 2019

Date: Tuesday 15 October 2019, 11:00 am - 4:00 pm

Venue: York Art Gallery

The 15th October marks the 180th anniversary of Queen Victoria proposing marriage to Albert.

To mark the event work alongside artist Alison Welsh, embellishing a crinoline inspired dress with buttons. Take inspiration from the ceramic buttons of Dame Lucie Rie surrounding you whilst you stitch under the Victorian roof space of CoCA, York Art Gallery Centre of Ceramic Art.

The resulting dress will remain on display in the exhibition.

Drop-in artist-led workshop suitable for adults and children over the age of 8 with accompanying adults. Baby friendly resources are available.

Join Alison Welsh for a free 30 minute talk as we mark the 180th anniversary of Queen Victoria proposing marriage to Albert. Alison Welsh is Head of Fashion Research at Manchester Metropolitan University and is based within the Manchester Fashion Institute. She is a fashion designer and educator who additionally works with communities and museums, advocating fashion and textiles as instruments for social change.
