Visit York Castle Museum as our 80th Birthday celebrations continue! Discover the history of party foods such as chocolate and how they are used for celebrations, and watch demonstrations in the Castle Kitchen – you might even get to try some!

Roman Parade – Sun 3 Jun 2018

Roman Parade

Venue: York Museum Gardens

Come and see a spectacular sight as six Roman Legions and Roman civilians march through the centre of the historic city of York. The route each day will start from York Museum Gardens and the march will go via Lendal, St Helen’s Square, Davygate, Church Street, Petergate, Deangate, York Minster, Duncombe Place, Blake Street and Lendal.

York Museum Garden Tours

Venue: York Museum Gardens

Meet inside the Museum Street gates and gain an insight into one of the most popular gardens in York. The gardens contain a wealth of plant life, botanical specimens and wildlife, as well as the spectacular ruins of St Mary’s Abbey and the Roman Multangular Tower. Our knowledgeable guides will show you the highlights of this truly unique garden.

Tours start at 1pm every Sunday and last approximately one hour.

The Roman period was the first in Britain to leave a written record, giving us the names of individuals. In the Yorkshire Museum there are a number of inscriptions which mention women in particular and by exploring what these tell us, both textually and pictorially, we can gain some insight into life and death in Roman York.
