Celebration Trail – Sat 2 Jun 2018

Cartoons of a Roman and a male and female Victorian

Celebrate our 80th anniversary by following and solving celebratory clues around the museum. Enter your completed trail into a prize draw with the opportunity to win a special gift.

The trail will be available daily 26 May to 3 June.

Meet the Authors – Sat 2 Jun 2018

Venue: The Hospitium

Come and meet the best-selling authors of your favourite Roman novels as they join the festival for the whole weekend in the Hospitium. Authors include: Ben Kane, Harry Sidebottom, Penny Ingham, Simon Turney, Ruth Downie, Jane Finnis, LJ Trafford, Alex Gough, Brian Young and Paul Chrystal.

There will also be free author talks at the following times:

2 June, 12.30pm – Harry Sidebottom
2 June, 2.30pm – Simon Turner
3 June, 11.00am – Ben Kane
3 June, 2.30pm – Kurt Hunter Mann

Join students from the University of York who will read and perform their Roman-inspired stories on our beautiful mosaic floor.

This activity takes place 2 and 3 June throughout the day and is suitable for all ages.

Join Mike Nicholson, author of the Museum Mystery Squad series, throughout the day for a family-friendly, fun and interactive session of stories and mystery-making from Roman facts and artefacts!

This activity takes place at 10.30am, 1.30pm and 2.30pm.

Be put through your paces as you take part in our recruitment process to see if you measure up to be enlisted into the Roman Army. Learn about Lucius, Standard Bearer for the Ninth Legion, and make your own Eagle of the Ninth standard.

This activity is repeated tomorrow 3 June, 11am to 1pm and 2pm to 4pm.

A 15 minute family-friendly drop in session demonstrating the varied influences on Eboracum from around the whole of the Roman Empire, including a closer look at the life of the Ivory Bangle Lady on display in the museum.

This activity takes place 2 and 3 June, 11am to 12pm and 1pm to 2pm. Suitable for all ages.

Join us in the York Museum Gardens opposite the Yorkshire Museum for a series of spectacular family-friendly displays.

Saturday 2 June
11.00am – Festival opening within the Living History Camp
12 noon – Gun salute
12.30pm – Inspection of the Roman troops by Garrison Sergeant Major Brian Kiernan
12.45pm – Roman Parade through York
1.30pm – Birds of Prey demonstrations with Owl Adventures
2.00pm – Social history demonstration
3.00pm – Military Display
3.30pm – Kids Army
4.00pm – Arena closes
