Take a trail around the museum and see if you can spot our seven Viking characters to find the missing letters that spell a Viking word. Hand it in to our Visitor Experience team for your reward and to be entered in our prize draw!

Votes For Women!

Discover the history of the fight for women’s right to vote at the museum this half term. Put on a sash (or opt for a policeman’s helmet!) and join our Suffragette on Kirkgate, the museum’s Victorian Street. March with placards, demonstrate, and protest for your cause. Be careful you don’t get arrested by the policeman and locked up in our cell!

Marches will take place throughout the day on Kirkgate from 10am to 4pm every day 10-18 February.

100 Years of Women's Work

Join us this half term to find out more about ‘Win the War’ cookery as part of this year’s ‘100 Years of Women’s Work’ memorial events. Celebrate the working lives of women during the First World War with daily demonstrations of recipes from the period in our Castle Kitchen – you might even get to have a taste!

Demonstrations will take place daily 10-18 February, 11am – 1pm and 2pm – 4pm.

Suffragettes Volunteers Talk

This year marks the centenary of the 1918 Representation of the People Act, which gave the vote to some women in Britain. York Castle Museum volunteers Emma Flint and Elizabeth Shaw have been helping to research the history of women’s suffrage. Emma and Elizabeth will be presenting their findings in a series of free talks throughout the year titled ‘Unstoppable Women: The Suffragettes in York’.

Talks take place in the Home Front section of our exhibition ‘1914: When the World Changed Forever’.

Women Artists Trail

Follow a trail to find works of art by leading female artists to celebrate the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage. Look at the different styles and materials to create your own artwork in our Studio and add to our collage inspired by ‘Hua De Tu An, Flower Pictures II’ by Felicity Aylieff.

The Studio will be open daily 10-18 February at 11am – 1pm and 2pm – 4pm.
