Discover the tradition and history of this special festive treat with our demonstrations in the Castle Kitchen creating gingerbread decorations. You might even get to try some! Demonstrations will take place 11am – 1pm and 2pm – 4pm.

The Lost Letters - A Christmas Mystery

A cheeky Christmas Elf has hidden children’s letters to Father Christmas! Follow a special Christmas trail and join in with festive activities to solve the mystery before meeting Father Christmas to receive a gift.

£5 per child, which includes meeting Father Christmas and a gift.

Admission applies for adults, no need to book.

On Saturday 23 December, Father Christmas will be with us 10-11.30am, 12-1.30pm, 2-3.30pm and 4-5pm. Trails can be purchased from 9.30am until 3.30pm. Please note that we advise arriving early to see Father Christmas as he is very popular. Due to high demand, waiting times to see Father Christmas after completing the trail have been up to an hour.

Please note that pushchairs cannot be taken into galleries. A ‘buggy park’ and a choice of baby carriers are available free of charge.

Join our Ebenezer Scrooge as he discovers the true meaning of Christmas under the garlands of our Victorian street, Kirkgate – the perfect way to feel festive!

Today’s performances will take place at 11am, 11.45am, 12.30pm, 2pm, 2.45pm and 3.30pm.

Guide's Gallery Talk

Venue: York Castle Museum

Join one of our costumed guides on our famous Victorian street Kirkgate every day at 11.45am and 3.00pm for a free 15 minute informal talk.

Each talk is different but will provide an introduction to Kirkgate, the history of York Castle Museum, and the objects on display, as well as the people who lived and worked in York during the Victorian period of 1870-1901.

Please note that talks are subject to the availability of our guides.
