The Wold Newton Hoard – Wed 31 Aug 2016

The Wold Newton Hoard

Dates: Wednesday 31 August 2016–Friday 7 October 2016, 12:00 pm - 12:15 pm
Venue: Yorkshire Museum

The Wold Newton Hoard contains over 1,800 Roman coins and was discovered by a metal detectorist near the village of Wold Newton, East Yorkshire, in 2014. The hoard dates to 307AD, a period of great uncertainty in the Roman Empire and Yorkshire. It features coins depicting Constantius and also the first coins to proclaim his son, Constantine, Augustus after he was made emperor in York.

Hear about the importance of this rare Roman hoard with special talks from Yorkshire Museum guides. Talks are free starting at 12pm every day and there’s no need to book.

Relaxed Opening – Fri 16 Sep 2016

Date: Friday 16 September 2016, 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Venue: York Castle Museum

Friday September 16th 2016 sees us holding our first ever relaxed opening at York Castle Museum.

We know that our museum can be loud and busy at times, so at 3pm until we close at 5pm we will put our lights on full and turn off all the sound effects so it’s a less overwhelming environment for our visitors. You’ll still be able to visit all the galleries, but there will be no dark areas and no sudden sounds.

We will still have guides on Kirkgate in Victorian costume and we will still put on the films in the prison gallery, but we’ll warn you in advance if you are about to go into an area where a film may start suddenly. We’ll also have a quiet space available should you need it.

We hope to run these events once a month, so if you don’t get chance to look at everything on your first visit, not to worry. And remember, children can visit the museum for free with their adults!

Check out our visual stories available online so you know what to expect.

The event is free with admission and there is no need to book.
