Description
A circular gilded and chip carved copper alloy disc brooch now broken into two. The upper surface is three main concentric sections. The centre is formed by a circular socket which once would have held a gem stone or similar. The middle section comprises four t-shaped red garnets (one missing) alternating with open circular sockets, smaller than the central socket, with traces of backing paste still extant in each socket interspersed between garnets and socket are raised simple interlace motifs. The outer section comprises two bands of decoration. The inner is formed by a band of circles inlaid with gold whilst the outer is decorated upto eight groups of chip-carved decoration. Four circular empty sockets are Traces of the backing paste from missing gem stones survive in the circular sockets. On the reverse the remains of hinged pin and its pin now survive. Being very worn in places it may have been kept as a family heirloom for some time before being lost or broken.
