- Rectangular plaque with inscription for dedication to the temple of Serapis.
Described in Eboracum as 'Dedication tablet, in gritstone, 3ft by 2ft 1in, by 7ins, with an inscription surrounded by a cable moulding in an ansate panel. Each ansa is of pelta form, decorated with a medial star in a circle, while the spandrels are occupied by a pair of cult standards above and a leaf and rosette below. The letters, deeply cut but ill arranged, increase in size towards the bottom of the stone, except for the final line, where they are small.... DEO SANCTO SERAPI TEMPLVM A SO LO FECIT CL(AVDIVS) HIERONY MIANVS LEG(ATVS) LEG(IONIS) VI VIC(TRICIS) 'To the holy god Serapis, Claudius Hieronymanius, legate of the Sixth Legion Victorious, built this temple from the ground.' Claudius Hieronymianus is identified with a vir clarissimus of this name involved in a judgement by Papinian about a will and with the praeses of Cappadocia and 3rd centuries as persecting Christians after his wife's converson. C Wellbeloved associated the founding of this temple with the close connection between Severus and the Egyptian god Serapis.'
