Description
Area of mosaic floor with decoration of a bull with fish tail. Eboracum details it and its find spot: 'Buildings, dedication-stone, mosaic pavement, foundations, etc., were found in the 18th and 19th centuries under and near Toft Green. The religious dedication-stone and foundations of one apsed building were discovered in 1770 in the course of digging the cellar of a house in Toft Green opposite and NW of Barker Lane. In 1840, whilst the street (Toft Green) was being revetted adjacent to the old Railway Station and almost opposite Barker Lane, a mosaic pavement set in concrete floor 6ins. thick and wall foundations of a second apsed building were uncovered at a depth of 6 ft. Although under the street, a collapse of soil enabled a large part of the mosaic to be recovered... The mosaic is now in the Yorkshire Museum and shows a bull with a fish tail. The find was adjacent to the remains found in 1770 and may be part of the same complex. The room containing the mosaic was 12 ft. wide and extended almost to the centre of the street, being 27ft. long; the SE end was apsidal with an external buttress, at the NW end was a curved step. A parallel wall stood SW of the room. The walls were 2ft thick.'
