New Community Exhibition at York Castle Museum Explores 50 Years of York’s LGBT History

14 March 2017

Opening in June 2017, just in time for York Pride, a new community exhibition at York Castle Museum will explore 50 years of York’s LGBT history.

The exhibition will tell the story of how LGBT rights in York have grown – from the partial decriminalisation of sex between men in 1967, to the present day – and how the struggle continues. Discover stories from York’s LGBT past, from the gay origins of the New Year’s Eve gathering at the Minster, to the “disco of a thousand lesbians”.

The team of volunteers behind the exhibition are still looking for contributions. Do you have any stories, photos or objects from York’s LGBT history? If so, we’d love to hear from you.

Contributions relating to bi, trans and asexual history are particularly welcome. Please contact Kit Heyam at York LGBT History Month – kit@yorklgbthistory.org.uk / 07504 690246.
