Description
Oval Medusa pendant. Small suspension hole drilled through top. Medusa's small winged head-dress is decorated with scored cross-hatching. Four stylized snakes are arranged with one either side of her face and two emerging from her chin. Both faces are polished. Eboracum describes this as the best of the York Medusa pendants, continuing: "The Gorgon, very well carved in relief, occupies the whole of an upright oval... perforatons for suspension being hidden in the hair." Reflective spectroscopy analyses by Allason-Jones and Jones 2001 produced an optical reflection of 0.2%, identifying the material as true jet.
