The sessions are suitable for beginners and for those who have drawn before and wish to rekindle their desire to draw again. You can brush up on basic techniques and explore new ones with different media.
Inspired by our exhibition Bloom, we will work from plants and flowers to introduce you to the formal elements of drawing, exploring line, tone, texture, mark making and colour.
Flower drawing can teach us to see more and to see better, with detailed observation as to how flowers work and how to make sense of them on paper. They are rarely as we think they are. Once we understand their key characteristics, we can draw them in a loose and free way, and they still hold together and make sense. Once we have learned this observation, we can apply it to different subjects.
We will cover drawing techniques using a range of media, including charcoal, pencil and both oil and soft pastels.
Taking images from the Bloom exhibition as our inspiration, we will start by drawing and painting simple leaves, stems and single flowers before looking at making composition studies.
During the session, you should be able to…
Apply skills in an observational study using a range of drawing media.
Use line, tone, and texture as expressive and descriptive elements.
Confidently select and simplify complex forms.
Materials will be provided, but please feel free to bring your own.
Rob is a York-based artist and tutor. As a workshop leader, Rob encourages, advises and listens, so please do come along and take advantage of his skills and experience.
This workshop is part of our ‘Bloom’ exhibition events programme.
