Yorkshire Museum showcases Treasure Finds to mark 20th anniversary of the Treasure Act 1996

24 August 2017

The Yorkshire Museum has created a special display and museum trail to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the Treasure Act 1996 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

A display case in the museum’s foyer will highlight a selection of the important objects that the museum have acquired through the Act. Visitors can then take a new Treasure Trail around the museum’s collections and displays to find Treasure artefacts highlighted with the Treasure 20 logo.

Since its inception, over 11,000 Treasure finds have been reported under the Act, presenting local museums with an opportunity to acquire important objects from all periods of British history. Treasure objects not acquired by museums have a permanent record on the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) online database.

As part of the anniversary, The Telegraph ran an online competition inviting votes for the nation’s favourite Treasure which included the Vale of York Hoard. Dating to 10th century AD, the hoard is one of the largest collections of Viking material found in Britain. It is currently on display at the Yorkshire Museum as part of the exhibition Viking: Rediscover the Legend.
