Description
Three-piece iron handcuff. Single cuff only. square-section, straight cross bar with a circular terminal at either end. The mobile, curved bow is rivetted through one terminal. The bow is a large ellipse, also terminating in a circular head with a central perforation. The bow is fused in a raised position. The terminal of the crossbar, immediately below the open edge of the bow, contains the locking mechanism proper. A barrel lock remains fused in situ, open on one side. The internal mechanism has corroded entirely. Excavated from beneath Clifford's Tower - associated with one of the 18th century prisons on the eye of york?
