We’re excited to announce that our popular Teenage Art School (TAS) will run again this summer!

This week-long free workshop offers 14 – 17 year olds the opportunity to work with gallery professionals and practicing artists to create outcomes inspired by the upcoming British Museum touring exhibition ‘Drawing attention: emerging artists in dialogue’, on display at York Art Gallery from 27 October 2023 – 28 January 2024.

Led by artist Ugonna Hosten, students will be taken through a series of drawing exercises based on a still life set; with the focus to improve observational skills whilst exploring the rich diversity of the printmaking medium, employing a range of materials from drypoint plastic, screen printing and linoleum, to ad hoc alternatives that could lead to surprising results!

As well as practical demonstrations of traditional methods, the students will be supported to explore improvised approaches to printmaking, enabling them to go on their own journey and incorporate these approaches in the way that best suits their style of working.

TAS is suitable for absolute beginners and those with experience alike.

‘Drawing attention: emerging artists in dialogue’ is a British Museum touring exhibition, showcasing emerging talents in the field of contemporary drawing. TAS work will sit alongside highlights from the British Museum and York Art Gallery’s collections including works by Edouard Manet, Mary Delany and Barbara Hepworth.

Ugonna Hosten is a Nigerian-born British emerging artist whose practice encompasses drawing, printmaking and assemblage.  Ugonna has been commissioned by York Art Gallery to create a new contemporary work for the exhibition ‘Drawing attention: emerging artists in dialogue’ drawing on objects from the collection, including works on paper, paintings and ceramics.

Places are limited so students must be able to commit to the full week. We expect the sessions to run from 10am – 4pm, with packed lunch provided.
