Mesolithic art and personal ornamentation: Insights from Star Carr and beyond – Wed 5 Mar 2025

Mesolithic art and personal ornamentation: Insights from Star Carr and beyond

Join Dr Andy Needham (Department of Archaeology at the University of York) for the next in our series of free talks in association with our current exhibition, Star Carr: Life after the ice.

The talk explores a collection of beads and pendants discovered at the Early Mesolithic site of Star Carr, which includes perforated animal teeth; drilled pieces of amber; shale beads and a unique engraved shale pendant, which constitutes the earliest Mesolithic engraving in Britain. A resemblance between this engraved object and similar forms found on other engraved objects from other parts of Europe invites comparison between Star Carr and the wider British and European Mesolithic context. While Mesolithic art and personal ornamentation remains a relatively rare phenomenon, a growing corpus of objects from across Britian and Europe provides a fascinating insight into the Mesolithic world.
