York Environment Festival: Curious and Creative Gardening Tour

Learn about the initiatives and interventions York Museums Trust’s Gardens Team have made to make their busy public garden more wildlife friendly. Take a tour around over 10 acres of grounds, discovering inspiration for your own garden or workplace green spaces.

You’ll learn about climate change and biodiversity, discover the importance of insects for the food chain and how to manage your green space throughout the seasons to create wildlife habitat, and adopt a new perspective with some native weeds.

Suited to people aged 12+ with an interest in making green spaces more wildlife friendly. Under 16’s must be accompanied by and adult.

Meet on the hard standing in front of the entrance to the Yorkshire Museum.

Discover ways of bringing the story of Viking England to life in the classroom in this new CPD workshop for Primary School educators at Yorkshire Museum.

Enjoy a tour of the new Viking North exhibition, handle original Viking artefacts, and learn about the activities and resources that we can offer schools at the Yorkshire Museum. You’ll also get to hear about some exciting upcoming projects.

Artist spotlight on: Joanne Coats – Wed 15 Oct 2025

Artist spotlight on: Joanne Coats

Venue: York Art Gallery

Joanne Coates is a visual artist from North of England whose work explores rural working class identity, ecological change, and class politics. Her practice is grounded in photography, installation, and collaboration with communities across the UK. Coates has received international recognition including the Jerwood/Photoworks Award, the Hopper Prize, and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art’s Vasseur Artist Award. In 2024, she was appointed Election Artist by the Speaker’s Advisory Committee on Works of Art for the House of Commons. Her work continues to focus on a gendered perspective of overlooked voices in rural Britain questioning the visibility, labour, and power.

Talk is included in General Admission.

Art activities to release your creative energy!
Set in the beautiful surroundings of York Art Gallery’s Studio space, this 2 hour workshop gives opportunity for discovery and time to explore a variety of art materials and inspiring themes designed to promote wellbeing.
Enjoy the company of others, creating art with gentle guidance from artist Griselda Goldsbrough.  For adults (16+ only) and running one Sunday each month, there is no need to book for this workshop, session will start at 10:30am and run for approximately 2 hours, it is a practical art session which is suitable for all abilities.

Give yourself time to sharpen and share your drawing skills in this two-hour sketching workshop with artist Griselda Goldsbrough.

Enjoy working in sketchbooks in a relaxed and friendly group, taking inspiration from the collections at York Art Gallery. Materials provided.

These informal practical art sessions are for adults only (16+) and are suitable for absolute beginners or those who create regularly.

Sessions will run on one Wednesday each month (Please book separately for each session).
