 Come watch our cookery demonstrations throughout the day of retro school pudding recipes including Jam Roly Poly, Chocolate Concrete and Cornflake Tart with Pink Custard. Tasters may be available if you’re lucky! 

 Pick up a recipe card or scan the QR code available to get the recipes straight to your phone to try recreate yourself at home.

Think history’s just a boring list of facts and dates? Think again! Join public historian, podcaster, and author Greg Jenner for a whirlwind romp through the chaotic conquest of Britain by the Romans, based on his children’s book Totally Chaotic History: Roman Britain Gets Rowdy! Peppering his fast-paced talk with jokes and funny images, Greg will reveal how Julius Caesar failed, why Emperor Claudius surprised everyone by succeeding, how Caratacus and Boudica fought back, and what happened next to change Britain forever!

Greg Jenner is the host of the chart-topping BBC podcast You’re Dead to Me, and recently presented its family-friendly spin-off Dead Funny History. He was the historical consultant on the multi-award-winning BBC TV comedy show Horrible Histories, and is the author of 4 books for children, and 3 for adults.

Every Roman soldier remembers their first battle, and now it’s your little warrior’s turn to take to the battlefield! From the makers of York Viking Festival’s Kids Barbaric Battle, a new Roman-themed conquest will see up to 100 young fighters take part in a playful, choreographed battle to prove themselves worthy of the gods.  

Safety comes first, little legionaries under 5 will need an adult by their side on the battlefield (*each child ticket includes one adult to supervise) and foam weapons, shields and equipment are provided. 

Kids Barbaric Battle also returns Sunday 24 May 2026 at 11am and 1.15pm.

Discover the answers to these questions and more through a storytelling experience with Kate Cunningham and Vlad Flea in the storytelling area of York Museum Gardens.

Vlad and the Roman Triumph and talking about Roman life and strange facts.
