Please note: The downstairs temporary exhibition galleries will be closed due to an exhibition changeover.

Viking North Creative Workshop: Natural Dyeing

Explore the intriguing process of natural dyeing onto cloth on this one day introductory workshop with Textile Artist & Printmaker Kirstie Williams. Taking inspiration from plants and vegetables the Vikings would have used for dyeing, you will explore a range of colours onto different fabrics, as well as looking at how mordants and modifiers will help to change the shades you can achieve. Come away with your own colour chart of small fabric swatches and a whole lot of knowledge to continue natural dyeing at home!

Kirstie Williams is a practising printmaker and textile artist based in Wakefield. Her practice is process led and primarily explores the research and application of natural dyes and handmade plant based printing inks. She draws inspiration from textile heritage, historic buildings and archival material from which to develop her work and ideas. She primarily works with dyeing and screen printing methods and enjoys working on specific projects, and commissions as a focus for her practice.

All materials will be provided. No experience is necessary

This inspiring launch event for LGBT History Month 2026 in York celebrates diversity, inclusion and the rich history of LGBTQ+ communities. This year’s theme is ‘Science and Technology’, focusing on the stories and contributions that have shaped progress and continue to drive equality forward.

The event will feature performers sharing lived experiences and insights on LGBTQ+ history and activism, talks exploring current challenges and opportunities for inclusion, community organisations highlight local projects and initiatives, and networking opportunities to connect with advocates, allies and community members.

This event is free to attend and open to all. Pre-booking is essential. Donations are welcome and will be held by York LGBT Forum (registered charity 1162234). Tickets are limited and are available via TicketTailor.

Drop-in sensory play sessions for pre-walking babies and their grown-ups in the atmospheric surroundings of York Art Gallery.

Using our beautiful sensory toolkit, a collection of colourful squishy sculptural objects, sessions will be gently facilitated, exploring shape, colour and texture.

Gallery Babies is a welcoming and supportive space to relax, bond with your baby and meet other parents and carers, providing a bit of calm and care to your daily routine.

The session starts at 10am and finishes at 12pm, but you can drop in and out at any time. Even after the session has finished, our sensory toolkit will remain on gallery for you to continue to explore with your baby.

These sessions are designed for pre-walking babies, however we understand that you may have your hands full with more than one child! If that’s the case the Studio will be open and can be used as a space to play, read and eat much needed snacks outside of the galleries if needed. Buggy parking and baby changing facilities available.

We are also offering a special offer in Sketch café for anybody attending a session: Hot drink and cake £6.00 and lunch and drink £12.00.
