Flight of the Birds – Puppet Making

Inspired by Summer at York Castle Museum and the spectacular bird of prey displays at Victorian galas, design and make your own bird puppet with Hoglets Theatre Company. Take flight and show off your creation in one of our bird parades throughout the day! We’ll provide all the materials and instructions you need to create. This is a drop in activity for all ages, join anytime during your visit.

There are only two seasons in the Viking world.
Summer and Winter.
It is winter.
Night and day are dark and the air is cold. Raids must stop. Longboats are pulled out of the freezing river onto land, and the Great Army must shelter from the harsh weather.
In the dark, fire meets ice and crackles. A story can be heard on the wind. A tune is played. A laugh rings out!
This summer, visit the Winter… as the camp dwellers bring the dark season to life with stories, music, games and laughter.
Meet characters from the Winter camp and discover more from the Viking North exhibition through live performance and interactive interpretation with History Riot.

Phineas Fickletickle Totally Tremendous Time Travelling Tincture

Join Phineas Fickletickle with his imaginary enchanted hot air balloon, as he travels round the museum to help his friends get back to their own time period using his collection of magical tinctures. They will visit Medieval, Georgian and Edwardian periods, as well as the 1960s, so there’s plenty to discover and learn.
Visitors can follow these promenade performances which will run for 30 minutes.
Please note this is a standing performance and travels through the yard out to the mill area at the back of the museum.
Times will be advertised at the museum on the day.

As part of our summer celebrating York galas of the past, which were full of floral displays, watch live cookery demonstrations that use edible flowers, some from our own Museum Gardens. There’ll be tasters to try and recipes to take away for you to create at home.

Print & Bloom: A Lino Workshop Inspired by the Victorian Language of Flowers

Join us for a fun and creative workshop inspired by Summer at the Castle Museum!
Discover the hidden meanings behind blooms as you carve and print your own floral designs in this hands-on lino printing workshop. Inspired by the romantic symbolism of the Victorian era, each flower tells a story. Perfect for beginners and creatives alike, this session blends history, art, and personal expression in a uniquely botanical experience.
All materials will be provided. No experience is necessary but participants will need to have good hand dexterity.
Ages 16+ (under 18 must be accompanied by an adult)
Admission to York Castle Museum is included for the day of the workshop only.

The Ran Tanners are a pair of roving miscreants who (when not doing hard labour in chokey or dodging the pressgang), play the traditional music of Georgian and Victorian England using Fiddles, Bagpipes and Squeezeboxes.

A letterpress workshop delivered by Thin Ice Press.
Harland Miller cites Edgar Allan Poe as his first literary influence. His love for Poe inspired a 2008 exhibition, in which Miller invited 35 artists to respond to the American writer’s life and work. In this workshop, participants will get to grips with the basics of letterpress printing. You will learn to compose metal type in order to print a short quotation from Poe. We will print the results on a tabletop Adana press, and close the session with a fun few minutes of printing overlapping words and phrases, inspired by Miller’s passion for letters and type as visual art. All participants will go away with a set of unique postcards, celebrating the enduring art of Edgar Allan Poe and Harland Miller.
