Inspired by Summer at York Castle Museum and the spectacular bird of prey displays at Victorian galas, design and make your own bird puppet with Hoglets Theatre Company. Take flight and show off your creation in one of our bird parades throughout the day! We’ll provide all the materials and instructions you need to create. This is a drop in activity for all ages, join anytime during your visit.

Join Phineas Fickletickle with his imaginary enchanted hot air balloon, as he travels round the museum to help his friends get back to their own time period using his collection of magical tinctures. They will visit Medieval, Georgian and Edwardian periods, as well as the 1960s, so there’s plenty to discover and learn.

Visitors can follow these promenade performances which will run for 30 minutes.

Please note this is a standing performance and travels through the yard out to the mill area at the back of the museum.

Join us for a fun and creative workshop inspired by Summer at the Castle Museum!
Discover the hidden meanings behind blooms as you carve and print your own floral designs in this hands-on lino printing workshop. Inspired by the romantic symbolism of the Victorian era, each flower tells a story. Perfect for beginners and creatives alike, this session blends history, art, and personal expression in a uniquely botanical experience.

All materials will be provided. No experience is necessary but participants will need to have good hand dexterity.
Ages 16+ (under 18 must be accompanied by an adult)

The Ran Tanners are a pair of roving miscreants who (when not doing hard labour in chokey or dodging the pressgang), play the traditional music of Georgian and Victorian England using Fiddles, Bagpipes and Squeezeboxes.

The Silly History Boys will be delighting us with circus fun. Watch their silly antics and daring acts, then have a go yourself outside in the yard.

Story Craft Theatre will be going on a Wicked Wednesday adventure, and you are all invited!

With the power of imagination, you might find yourselves swinging through a magical garden, jumping over mesmerising mountains or even swimming in a great ocean. All from the comfort of York Art Gallery.

The sessions will include games, singing and an interactive story.

Children must be always accompanied by an adult. Due to space restrictions, a max of 1 adult per booking.

Story Craft Theatre is a children’s theatre company created by Cassie Vallance and Janet-Emily Bruce. After setting up in 2018 they have hosted birthday parties, events and classes throughout the UK. Partnerships have included Castle Howard, National Trust, Rural Arts, Rowntree Park, Theatre 41 and York Theatre Royal.
