Head to York Castle Museum this summer to explore over 400 years of York’s history!
Travel back in time to our famous Victorian Street, Kirkgate, and soak up the sights, sounds and smells of Victorian York. Then explore our original prison cells that once held the notorious highwayman Dick Turpin!
The popular outdoor Playbox, run by Playful Anywhere, will be BACK at the museum this August. Full of fun indoor and outdoor activities there’s something for everyone to enjoy – whatever the weather! Visitors can also enjoy NEW and exciting ‘imagination’ stations and watch fun cooking demonstrations in the Castle Kitchen!
New for Summer 2023 visit our latest exhibition ‘Celebrating York’s Gypsy and Traveller Heritage’, developed in partnership with York Travellers Trust. Through photography and historical information, learn about their important connections to the city, and then enjoy its activity space where you can create your very own beautiful paper flower.
All activities are included in general admission to York Castle Museum. Please note the Playbox will be open everyday in August from 11am-3pm.

Making a mock-ery out of dinner!
Every Wednesday from 26 July – 30 August, 10.30am-4pm
Included in general admission
Head to the Castle Kitchen to watch a range of wonderfully weird 1940 ‘mock’ recipes come to life through our fun cooking demonstrations. Using alternative ingredients from the days when rationing made some ingredients hard to come by, join us as we make a mock-ery of dinner!
Imagination Stations

Spark your imagination this summer with NEW and exciting ‘imagination’ stations! Explore York Castle Museum and have fun along the way with a variety of activities perfect for the whole family. Expect smelly selfies, a quest to find the smallest thing you can on our famous Victorian street, Kirkgate, the chance to explore with a pretend telescope and much more!
