Science Grrls Come to the Yorkshire Museum

Top female scientists will be hosting a day of hands on demonstrations and amazing gadgets at the Yorkshire Museum, York, next week to celebrate Ada Lovelace Day.
The York branch of ScienceGrrl are hoping to share their passion for all things scientific, including talking about their research (such as biology, nuclear physics, particle detection development and astronomy) and showcasing demonstrations using diamonds, radioactive rocks, infra-red cameras and microscopes.
Dr Gemma Wilson, will be there to meet the public and talk about her work with CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research.
The event is taking place on Saturday October 18 from 10am-3pm.
It is one of many events around the world to mark Ada Lovelace Day, an international celebration of the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering and maths.
Ada Lovelace (1815-1852) was a mathematician and writer often described as the world’s first computer programmer.
Gemma, Science Grrl York coordinator, said:
“This is a chance for people to come and have a go at scientific demonstrations and to meet some of the top female scientists who will be talking about their research.
“It is our aim to share our passion and inspire the next generation of women to find out more about the exciting scientific opportunities out there.”
The event is included in the admission price to the Yorkshire Museum, which is FREE to York Card Holders. It is suitable for all ages.
As well as the demonstrations there will also be a trail around the museum to follow, looking at past female scientists, with all entries put into a prize draw.
There will be prizes for under 8s and over 8s.
