J.M.W. Turner’s Odyssey masterpiece has arrived at York Art Gallery!

J.M.W. Turner’s iconic artwork has arrived at York Art Gallery, and the curators are busy unboxing and installing lots of treasures ahead of Gallery’s new major exhibition opening this week.

On loan from the National Gallery, ‘Ulysses deriding Polyphemus – Homer’s Odyssey’, has taken centre stage at York Art Gallery in Turner, Wedgwood & Beyond: Inspired by Flaxman, which opens to the public on Friday 18 September.

J.M.W. Turner and Josiah Wedgwood, as the exhibition title suggests, along with William Blake, Angelica Kauffman, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres and William Etty are amongst the incredible artists due to be on display. A series of creative workshops and Gallery talks are due to be announced for the autumn and winter period, and a range of wonderful retail products relating to the exhibition are already on sale in York Art Gallery’s shop.

The curators behind York Art Gallery’s recent successful exhibition Making Waves: The Art of Japanese Woodblock Print are currently installing the new Inspired by Flaxman exhibition and have hung the impressive Turner! There has been a flurry of activity, as all the amazing artworks have now been delivered and the team at York Art Gallery are completing the finishing touches to the exhibition.

Turner, Wedgwood & Beyond: Inspired by Flaxman runs from 18 September 2026 until 17 January 2027 and is included in general admission to York Art Gallery. Please visit York Art Gallery’s website for more information.
