Free events to evoke memories, stories and connection in York

Age UK York and York Museums Trust are delighted to be working in partnership to host three events for people to learn more about the York Castle Museum collection and to share personal memories of York.

‘York Memories and History Afternoons’ will feature a talk and a chance to handle a variety of artefacts from the York Castle Museum collection. There will also be selected collections from the York House of Memories partner organisations, including York Explore, York Army Museum, National Railway Museum, Borthwick Archive and Ryedale Folk Museum.

The everyday objects from the 1920s to 1990s include photographs of the city, a selection of clothes and uniforms, books and old tickets. Through these events, we hope the objects will evoke memories and stories, and through sharing them will help connections with others, reducing isolation and enhancing wellbeing.

The events will take place from 1.30-3pm on the following dates;

Tuesday 30th August 2022 – York before World War Two

Tuesday 11th October 2022 – Fashion Accessories

Tuesday 13th December 2022 – Christmas Past

Simon Holmes, Chief Executive, Age UK York, said: “We are delighted to be involved in these events taking place to bring older people together in such a unique setting. The events will give participants the opportunity not only to learn more about some of the historical artefacts at York Castle Museum but also to share personal experiences and stories. We think everyone able to attend is going to have a really enjoyable time”

Philip Newton, Communities Engagement Researcher at York Museums Trust, said: “This pilot is an exciting new partnership for us. I am looking forward to working with Age UK York to bring out our collections and use our new package as part of House of Memories. Museum objects have the power to connect to past memories and emotions.”

‘York Memories and History Afternoons’ will take place at York Castle Museum for people aged 65 and over. Each event will focus on a different theme, including wartime and Christmas memorabilia. Places are free but must be reserved in advance as numbers are limited.
