All YMT attractions are currently closed in line with the Government advice on Coronavirus.

DATE: 17 March 2020

During the coronavirus crisis, York Museums Trust is continuing to follow government advice and the safety and wellbeing of our staff, volunteers and visitors are of the utmost importance.

In line with the latest guidelines, from tomorrow, 18th March 2020, York Castle Museum, York Art Gallery and the Yorkshire Museum will be closed until further notice. We will continue to open York Museum Gardens daily between 7:30am and 5:30pm. We will also be cancelling all programmed activities and events for the next twelve weeks. This includes, Easter and Spring Bank holiday activities and the annual Eboracum Roman Festival.

New Update 23 March: From 5pm this evening (March 23) the Trust has sadly taken the decision to close York Museum Gardens until further notice. The recent fine weather has seen large numbers of people using the space, putting social distancing measures at risk. This unprecedented step is to ensure the health and wellbeing of our visitors, volunteers and staff.

We will be maintaining regular checks of the Garden during this period.

This is a rapidly changing situation but we will use our website, social media and newsletters to update you on any developments which may affect the cultural attractions in our care.

Where possible York Museums Trust employees are working from home and we are keeping in daily contact with all staff as this rapidly changing situation develops.

We are also in regular contact with Arts Council funded cultural organisations in York to support each other through this crisis.

Together we will continue to preserve culture for York, whilst caring for people’s health and wellbeing by following the latest Government guidelines.

Reyahn King, Chief Executive, York Museums Trust said:

“York Museums Trust is acting to close our museums to support public health measures during this crisis. We are maintaining access to Museum Gardens and hope that people will be able to enjoy them safely for exercise. We are committed to caring for York’s heritage and culture and will be encouraging people to access our online collections and offer over the next weeks. “
