Come and explore York Castle Museum with the experts!

DATE 12th May

A new programme of guided tours, from May 19 2021

York Castle Museum reopens next week (Wednesday May 19) with an exciting range of guided tours which will offer a new perspective on some of the museum’s most famous displays and collections.

From the world-famous Victorian Street, Kirkgate, to the infamous prison cells, the First World War galleries to the museum’s tantalising collections of confectionary, the tours are full of fascinating facts to give a glimpse into life in days gone by.

A series of curator led tours have also been launched, looking at the hidden history of York Castle, witchcraft and the museum’s nationally significant fashion and textile collections.

Each tour will be limited to a small number of people, as part of a range of measures put in place for the safety of visitors and staff.

Fiona Burton, public engagement manager for York Museums Trust, said: “We can’t wait to welcome visitors back to the museum next week with this exciting programme of guided tours. Whether you have been before or are a new visitor, the tours are packed full of insight and nuggets of information to help visitors experience the collections and displays in a completely new way.

“The tours include a special family tour of Kirkgate, designed for those with children five to 16. This tour was really popular when we ran it last year, and includes family friendly facts, such as why a Devil lurks outside the printers and why taking your “weasel” to the pawnbrokers was a weekly occurrence for many!

“With all of the tours, we have put in place a range of measures to make sure we can welcome you back in the safest way possible.”
