Description
On 24th and 25th July 2002 York Archaeological Trust carried out a watching brief during the hand excavation of a trench in the front garden of 13 Dewsbury Terrace, York (NGR SE 5991 5140) which was carried out in order to locate and repair a section collapsed foul water drain. The watching brief was undertaken at the behest of the main contractors for the work, Kenton Utilities and Developments Ltd. of Hoyland, Barnsley, in compliance with an archaeological condition imposed by the City of York Council Archaeologist, John Oxley. The site records are stored with York Archaeological trust under the Yorkshire Museum accession code YORYM : 2002.476. The earliest deposit encountered was loosely friable and consisted of mixed dumps of pale to mid brown gritty silty sand with frequent inter mixed demolition/construction dumps of brick, mortar, pantile and occasional micaceous sandstone fragments which are thought to be associated with the infilling of the construction cut out for the adjacent building. The damaged sewer was located approx. 2.40m BGL (metres below ground level), where it was sealed by the backfill of the trench in which the salt glazed ceramic pipe was originally laid. This backfill deposit was 2.20m thick and was similar to the construction cut backfill except that it was less well structured and contained more frequent inclusions of ceramic pipe fragments. It lay directly beneath a 0.20m thick deposit of friable dark grey silty slightly clayey sand which formed both the garden soil and the surface level at the time the watching brief was undertaken.
