- Description
- An archaeological watching brief was conducted during the topsoil stripping of three pasture fields as part of the extension of an existing landfill site at Harewood Whin near Rufforth, North Yorkshire. The work was undertaken by Northern Archaeological Associates for Mott MacDonald Bentley on behalf of Yorwaste Ltd in accordance with the project design.
During the monitoring of topsoil stripping a number of archaeological features were recorded. Of these, a number of ditches clearly related to known former field boundaries detailed on the 1st Edition OS map of 1850. A further ditch is thought to belong to a post medieval drainage system. Of more significance was a small, isolated circular pit containing a burnt fill and several sherds of late Iron Age pottery. A second, larger, sub rectangular pit was also excavated but no dating evidence was recovered from the feature. Neither feature could be associated with any other Iron Age remains.
