Description
Inscribed to the mother goddesses of the home with fluted sides and remains of red paint. Described in Eboracum as "Altar, of soft magnesian limestone, 8in by 17 and 1/2ins by 6 and 1/2 ins, elegantly carved. The sides are fluted and have been coated with gesso and painted, the flutings yellow and their stops red. The back is plain. The top is damaged but the altar is otheriwse in excellent condition.... C(AIVS) IVLIVS CRESCENS MATRI BVS DO MESTICIS V(OTUM) S(OLVIT) M(ERITO) L(IBENS) "Caius Juilus Crescens to the mother goddesses of the home paid his vow deservedly and willingly." The Matres were a popular Celtic triad of goddesses." Found with two other altars and the statue of Mars (YORYM : 1998.26).
