- Description
- Terret ring in the shape of a Brigantian figurine, possibly a horned god.
Catalogue entry from Bishop 1996: 6 "Copper alloy (yoe-mounted?), hollow-cast terret decorated in the Celtic manner with a stylized face. The rein-bearing loop is largely missing (leading to the 'horned god' colloquial name it has earned) and there is damage to the lower portion of the objct and the 'face'. There are decorative bosses (reminscient of brooches used for fastening clothing), apparently once inlaid with enamel , on either shoulder. The whole 'goggle-eyed' demeanous of tis figure is very un-Roman and it is tempting to ascribe it to a pre-Roman date, rather than see it as the product of the 2nd century Celtic Renaissance."
