Small gritstone altar. Described in Eboracum as "Altar, of gritstone, 7ins by 1ft by 7ins, found in 1880 in a dump of Roman stones...with burials below them, at St Mary's Convent, Nunnery Lane, close to the main Roman road, just outside the built up area of the Roman town. The stones had been gathered togther after the Roman period. DEO MARTI AGRIVS AVSPEX V(OTUM) S(OLVIT) L(IBENS) M(ERITO) 'To the god Mars, Agrius Auspex pays his vow willingly and deservedly.' The C sometimes read at the end of the first line is not a letter: it is most probably part of a leaf-stop."
