Description
Bow backed brooch. Bronze, with massive inlay ornament of pinkish-white coral. The bronze bow is hollow with two cut our petals of ornament on each side, and between them a bronze rivet which crosses the bow, piercing the inlay ornament. On the circular foot-disc is a star shaped pattern of inlay, whose rays (originally seven and now six) are attached by ?iron pins. The centre piece hasa bronze rivet which passes through the foot, crosses the foot-space and terminates on the unserside of the catch-plate. At the head, whose rin-head is ribbed, pivots on an iron bar held by four bronze tags; between the two side tags the iron bar has ribbed bronze covers - skeuomorphic of a bronze spring. The central iron bar extends to a pin, a large bead of coral inlay at each end (only one bead survives). The long "spring" is covered by a length of inlay in turn surmounted by a central bead attached by a bronze pin. Much of the ornament at this end of the brooch has a smooth brownish cover - possibly due to iron staining.
