Sound Walking York with artist Linda O’Keeffe – Sun 14 Jul 2019

Sound Walking York with artist Linda O’Keeffe

The practice of sound walking is often used to evoke memories of space through sound.

A sound walker pays attention to both the specific and general sonic environment, taking note of what sounds are intrusive and why, what types of feelings and memories are evoked through the practice of listening and how our perception of place changes when we focus on listening rather than seeing. Listening, unlike hearing, is an active process.

We can tune out what we hear but as an active listener we look to pay attention to the impact sound has on our relationship to a space.

As cities become more overcrowded and the link between the natural, and the urban environment expands, it becomes even more important to pay attention to what we hear in the everyday as we encounter a multitude of sounds, mediated, unregulated and community based.

On this workshop we will undertake a mapped sound walking route around the city, using a sonic mediative practice each participant will be given a mediation and a space to write about their sonic experience.

There is an opportunity to think about creating sound maps, textual documentation of your experience, or even performance as part of the sound walk.

The entire process will be approximately 2.5 – 3 hours.

This event is free with your gallery admission but please book via our Eventbrite here.
