Step onto the cobbles and peer in the windows of the fine shops along Kirkgate, hearing why a Devil lurks outside the printers and how taking your “weasel” to the pawnbrokers was a weekly occurrence for many.
Then head down the back alleys into York’s slums to discover how hard and deadly life was for the majority of the city’s residents as they battled against the awful conditions, where sharing a toilet with your whole street was the norm!
This is a family tour and aimed at children.

- Both the York Castle Prison and Kirkgate Victorian Street tours are guided tours with our Visitor Experience team.
- Your tour ticket is for that gallery only and does not admit you to the rest of the museum.
- If you wish to explore the rest of the museum galleries on the day of your tour a ticket can be purchased at the admissions desk at a reduced 50% rate.
- Your tour ticket is valid for that day only and does not provide free entry for the following 12 month period
- Please arrive 10 minutes before your tour start time to be checked in.
- Tickets are required for all tour attendees.
