The Ryedale hoard’s discovery gives us new examples from Roman Britain of images of powerful beings, divine or quasi-divine. They are among the most spectacular of many such images documented as copper alloy figures and fragments from England and Wales by the Portable Antiquities Scheme over the last quarter century. This lecture explores what these new finds teach us about the pantheon of Roman Britain, including the adoption of Roman gods and the adaptation of local or ‘Celtic’ deities to Roman forms. It investigates the new ways of encountering the divine which was one of the consequences of Roman conquest.
