Art Curator’s Talk – Wed 20 Jun 2018
Join a York Art Gallery curator or expert every third Wednesday of the month at 12.30pm for our free 30 minute curator’s talk.
On 20 June, Varvara Shavrova will give an introduction to ‘The Sea is the Limit’ as part of Refugee Week 2018.
The Sea is the Limit questions the meaning of nationalism, free movement, inclusion and exclusion. Through a wide range of media, including interactive installations, drawings, paintings, sculpture, audio, and video works, the artists exhibited here draw upon historical and contemporary narratives that shape identity and opinion about refugees and their experiences. This exhibition challenges our pre-existing concepts of migration, immigrants, dispossession, rootlessness, and the meaning(s) of national borders. Many of the artists are themselves migrants, and this exhibition explores the desire for freedom and a better life held by migrants that stands in sharp contrast to the reality they experience during their journeys.
Talks are free with no need to book (gallery admission applies).
