- The 8th century York Helmet is the most outstanding example of the Anglo-Saxon period to survive in Europe. On the crest is an inscription in Latin which translates as, 'In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit and God; and to all we say amen. Oshere'. Oshere was probably the name of its owner, possibly of the Northumbrian Royal Dynasty.
