Description
In shape of phallus at one end and hand making 'manus fica' gesture at other. Three left-hand and three right-hand objects, each with a scallop shell in the centre; possibly an allusion to Venus. These objects are a variation of the fist-and-phallus amulets common in Roman Britain and used as a deterrant to the evil eye. Fist-and-phallus amulets are traditionally associated with the Roman military as symbols of strength and fertility, but the final depositional context of these objects (an infant's grave at Catterick) is indicative of their alternative function. There is a central, oval-shaped perforation beneath the scallop shell, suggesting attachment, possibly as a single necklace.
