The Art of Clay – Wed 12 Sep 2018

The Art of Clay

Clay has specific techniques and its own jargon, teachings and residencies – independent from the visual arts – but also has many commonalities worth exploring. Within the long lasting institutional, categorical and cultural distinctions between visual arts and craft, we hope to discuss if those barriers matter any longer and to unravel the points in common between disciplines.

Throughout this Sackler CPD Programme Study Day, we will explore the art of clay as a hybrid, collaborative and interdisciplinary practice. Confirmed speakers include:

  • Author, historian and craft thinkers Tanya Harrod and Alison Britton
  • Curators Sarah Griffin and James Beighton
  • Andrew Renton, Keeper of Art National Museum of Wales
  • Adam Sutherland, Director Grizedale arts
  • Gallerist and ceramicist Tommaso Corvi-Mora
  • Alun Graves, Senior Curator – Ceramics & Glass, V&A
  • Isabella Smith, Assistant Editor at Ceramic Review
  • Artists Aaron Angel, Nao Matsunaga, Aneta Regel and Richard Slee.

There will be a curator-led tour of York’s CoCA collection which highlights and celebrates British Studio Ceramics and is amongst the most important in the UK.
